The DVR software will be turned off by default and can be turned on by opening up the HDHomeRun Setup application, clicking on the “ DVR” tab, and using “Use this PC for recordings”. When new firmware is available, just download and reinstall the Windows installer to update those files. When the HDHomeRun Setup application is open, it will look for all HDHomeRun hardware on the network and attempt to update them using the firmware available at the time the installer was downloaded. It will attempt to sideload the Windows 10 app on Windows 10, or install the older version of the viewer app for Windows 7/8. It includes the Setup application, firmware updates for HDHomeRun hardware, and DVR storage software. Only reason I don't use them is because their support of satellite tuners is very Euro-centric and therefore it is very difficult to configure them correctly to receive all the available channels, especially if you happen to be using DiSEqC or tone switches (if you're not into free-to-air satellite you can just ignore this sentence).The Windows installer contains multiple parts. Now if you are strictly a Windows person then you might want to look into MediaPortal, though I don't guarantee it will work with your HDHomeRun, however they have some of the best user support in their forums I have ever seen. TVHeadEnd is just the opposite, it works great with supported satellite tuners, but it takes a lot of fiddling (that requires some degree of Linux expertise) to make it recognize a HDHomeRun. It seems to have no problem with HDHomeRuns, but a lot of problem recognizing free-to-air satellite tuners. The next question is, do you have any experience with Linux? If so, then I would suggest using Mythbuntu as your backend system. Otherwise you will only be able to use it with an antenna. Your HDHomeRun Prime will work with a cablecard until your cable company drops support of them, assuming they will even let you install a new one. I don't recall where I read it but it was only a few months ago that I read somewhere that the FCC is going to let the cable companies discontinue support of cablecards. It depends on if you are wanting to receive live TV from an antenna, from cable, or from free-to-air satellite.Ĭablecards are basically going away.
